The Perth-based West Australian newspaper tells us that "Qantas flies into history with Antarctic journey." During the coming southern summer, the airline will send two Airbus A380s on sightseeing flights over the Antarctic. The 14 hour round trip flights will not land.
The first operates from Melbourne on New Year's Eve and the second from Sydney on Valentine's Day. From the article: "Prices for the New Year's Eve flight range from $999 for an economy class centre seat to $6299 in first class."
I've been checking the West Australian since our stay in Perth because its aviation writer Geoffrey Thomas taught me something fascinating in an article in the paper that I can't find on the web. (Also because I like the idea that the West Australian even HAS an aviation writer.)
Here's what he taught me that I bet you didn't know: Australia's two main air traffic control centers, in Melbourne and Brisbane, control 11 per cent of the world's air space, from New Zealand almost to Mauritius, and Indonesia to Antarctica.
