Founded on a river bank in 789, the city in this week's quiz is believed to have been the largest in the world around the year 1170. It was the capital city several times, most recently ending in 1912. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981, it has been a renowned center of Islamic learning for over a thousand years.
