Because the summer is so short, and the days so long, people all across Scandinavia are emerging from hibernation about now, and will live hard and furious for the next several months.
But it's mighty cold in winter. If the weather's brutal outside, you have plenty of time indoors to dwell inside your head. Which may account for the persistent Icelandic belief in fairies, elves and dwarfs. On the other hand, This may be another explanation.
