CS&W is pretty much the opposite of an economics blog, but we've noted here and here the challenges the economic downturn presents to China. And we'll acknowledge an active interest in China, having visited in the past and planning another trip in several months.
Still, it's worth mentioning that today's Financial Times reports that "China exports suffer record 17.5% decline" year on year in January. Perhaps even more notably, imports to China dropped a remarkable 43.1 per cent. Both figures underline a potential for worker unrest there in a year already fraught with the possibility for protest, as 2009 holds the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising next month, the 20th anniversary of Tiananmen Square in June and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic on 1 October.
