Amid continuing protests - from one side or the other - Thailand closes out a turbulent year with the government of new Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva chased from the Parliament to the Foreign Ministry to give his new government's policy speech yesterday.
Meanwhile the low grade insurgency grinds on in the south, where more than 3400 people have been killed since 2004.
Looks like the Thai people could use a hug. Or at least a smile.
This photo accompanies a story in the International Herald Tribune headlined "To lift motorists, smiley masks for Thai police."
