A CS&W post the other day, Sparsest Populations in the World, got me thinking about the possibility of travel to the places it mentioned, namely the Pitcairn Islands (about 65 permanent residents) and Iles Kerguelen (wind swept scientists). Thanks to the very nice South Pacific Travel Blog by guidebook author David Stanley, I've found several expeditions you can take to the Pitcairn Islands over the next couple of years.
They all last two or three weeks and start from Mangareva (Gambier Islands, French Polynesia), about a thousand miles east of Tahiti. According to Pacific Island Travel, Air Tahiti serves the Gambiers three times a month.
Iles Kerguelen, I suspect, are a different story. If you're just cruising around your map of the Indian Ocean one day (and I don't imagine you are), trace your finger between Cape Town and Perth, and a little south, and way out there in the middle you'll come across tthe French Southern and Antarctic Lands, one of which is Kerguelen. We'll post about Iles Kerguelen separately, shortly.
