Misha Glenny, once central European correspondent for The Guardian and later a correspondent for the BBC, and author of The Balkans and The Fall of Yugoslavia, writes in his most recent book McMafia, that in the 1970's, "some eighty per cent of heroin destined for the western European market would cross into Bulgaria from Turkey at the Kapetan Andreevo border point and into the hands of the DS," Bulgaria's KGB. In return, Kaptegon, an indigenous Bulgarian amphetamine, flowed toward the Middle East.
