The answer is: Oman. On a day trip from Muscat to the interior city of Niwaz, our driver veered off the highway because he thought we should see this place, a warren of crumbling walls - an entire village abandoned.
I saw this photo when a song called Lountang by the entirely unlikely duo of Senegalese kora player Ablaye Cissoko and German jazz trumpeter Volker Goetze was on the juke, and the two, somehow, fit perfectly.
