Last month we spent a day in the Rwandan border town of Gisenyi, opposite Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. That proximity to Congo led me to a new travelogue called Blood River, A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart. The author, Tim Butcher, is a reporter for London's Daily Telegraph, who sets out to travel the length of the river.
I don't know if he makes it, I'm only mid-book, but it's one of those absorbing tales of misery that Jeffrey Tayler has elevated to an art form (Tayler's own try at navigating the Congo is called Facing the Congo: A Modern Day Journey into the Heart of Darkness). Check it out.
The Rwanda gallery on EarthPhotos.com isn't posted yet, but the mountain gorillas we saw in Rwanda are there, in this gallery.
